Paul Newman's movie Cool Hand Luke gave us with the memorable phrase:

"What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Effective communication is the strongest indicator of success for an organization. With good communication, you can react rapidly to changes, maintain and improve morale, ensure follow-through, provide good customer service, and increase profits.

As we all know, however, communication can also be the weakest link in an organization's performance.

  • Formal communication links are those that are defined and written down. They should be designed into the organization's Strategic Design. They also may be neglected in favor of informal communication links.
  • Informal communication links (those which emerge out of demands of the job and the relationships between people) may support information flow well within a group . but cannot be counted on between groups.
